We are excited to present Tidetec, a Norwegian startup optimizing the technology of two-way hydro turbines, co-founded and led by Arne Kollandsrud.
Most tidal power plants only generate electricity in one direction. Even the next-generation ones that work both ways still lose efficiency. Tidetec solves this by using a patented rotating system that lets the turbine work efficiently in both directions—boosting energy output by over 20% compared to today’s most cost-effective solutions.
Tidetec is one of the 54 selected companies in Cohort 2 within the Renewable Energy Production group.
What’s the biggest industry problem that you’re tackling and how?
1) How do we generate sustainable energy when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing.
2) How do we earn money when the sun IS shining and the wind IS blowing all over Europe and the power prices are negative?
Tidetec has developed, successfully tested, and patented a disruptive turbine solution for predictable, weather-independent tidal range energy generation and energy storage. The solution is modular and scalable from 0,5-25 MW. We are now in the process of demonstrating and commercializing.
What keeps you awake at night about your startup?
We feel confident about our technology as it is based on knowledge from Norwegian hydropower and subsea technology. The challenge is the market. The planned projects are few and very large with long planning and consenting processes. That is why we focus on smaller projects that utilize existing infrastructure, such as dry docks or port basins, to demonstrate and start the learning curve.
In your wildest dreams, what would success look like for your company?
Ten years from now, Tidetec will be the first mover and the chosen turbine technology for a 30TWh/ year UK Tidal Range market that will save the planet millions of tons of carbon emissions.
To support our growing network and its startups, we invite potential stakeholders (investors, lead customers, mentors, and supporting partners) to apply here.
