Case Study Series 1200 x 200 (2)

“We continue serving our customers and making progress to change how batteries are made.”

Karl Peters, COO, Inition Energy

Inition Energy is a UK-based clean technology company on a mission to revolutionize battery production in support of the global transition to renewable energy. Established in 2021, the company operates out of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory at Harwell Campus. Its proprietary electrode manufacturing technology reduces energy consumption by 50%, requires 10 times less factory space, and eliminates toxic fumes during the production process. These advances lead to a 65% reduction in capital expenditures, making Inition Energy’s solution suitable for both large-scale and niche battery manufacturers.

Business Model Innovation for Sustainability

Inition Energy’s breakthrough lies in its ability to enable full electrode production process within a cost-effective dry room environment, which is critical for the development of next generation lithium metal batteries. The technology also enables the production of much thicker electrodes without cracking after the drying process, which is a key path towards ultra-high energy density batteries. Moreover, it reduces electricity consumption during production and is compatible with all cylindrical, prismatic and pouch battery assembly processes.

As Karl Peters, COO of the company, puts it:

“With our technology we are making the case for the production of high performance batteries at less than giga scale for market verticals. With much greater production efficiency and higher battery performance we can give these applications -such as subsea- the power they need at a price that give high margins and enormous customer value at the same time.”

Creating impact on the energy storage sector

The company’s mission is tightly aligned with global sustainability goals, aiming to democratize and decentralize energy storage, accelerate the transition to renewable energy, and promote responsible consumption and production practices.

Its innovations prove that cleaner, cheaper and more efficient battery manufacturing is essential, but also feasible.  As Karl explains:

We have proven that there is a better and more efficient path to giga scale battery production, especially when it comes to serving vertical specific needs.”

Joining D2XCEL: The benefits

Inition Energy joined the D2XCEL scaling program in September 2024. While at the program, the company achieved significant technological milestones, including the development of a new version of its electrode production machine and a prototype of a next generation part of its system which was built and tested.

Committed to its vision to make energy storage sustainable, accessible, democratized and decentralised, Inition Energy continues to accelerate its business impact, reshaping the future of advanced manufacturing and lithium-ion energy storage.

*Note:

Our case studies section illustrates the concrete impact of the D2XCEL scaling programme on selected ventures. They were chosen through a structured process based on mentor and group manager nominations and pre-defined criteria, prioritising companies that demonstrated measurable progress, strong relevance to societal and industrial challenges, innovative approaches, and clear potential for scalability. Together, the cases demonstrate how tailored support, international connections, and structured mentoring are translated into real outcomes across diverse sectors.
