“In a time when the transport sector is responsible for nearly 20% of global emissions, Elonroad’s technology delivers a transformative answer - enabling growth in mobility without compromising our planet.”
Karin Ebbinghaus, CEO & Co-founder, Elonroad
Founded in 2014 in Lund, Sweden, Elonroad is a pioneering cleantech company that specializes in digitalized conductive charging systems for electric vehicles (EVs). With a mission to electrify the entire transport sector, by significantly lowering CO2 emissions without increasing battery demand and lowering the total cost of ownership, Elonroad is determined to change the narrative about batteries in mobility and transportation. The innovative technology developed by the team enables EVs to charge while driving and when parked, thus reducing battery size requirements and enhancing operational efficiency.
Business Model Innovation for Sustainability
Elonroad is pioneering a groundbreaking electric road system that redefines how electric vehicles are charged. At the heart of Elonroad’s groundbreaking electric road system is a smart, high-tech infrastructure that transforms ordinary roads into dynamic charging platforms. Conductive rails on /in the road provide conductive power supply to a fully-retrofittable vehicle electricity collector unit (“pickup”), providing about 2-3 times the driveline power demand, thus charging the batteries while in contact with the road rails. Elonroad’s combined hardware/software system offers smart fleet charging, peak shaving, individual recognition, and billing of vehicles. It provides both stationary point-to-point and dynamic on-the-go charging options, both compatible with the vehicle pickup.
This continuous charging capability eliminates range anxiety, reduces reliance on oversized batteries, and accelerates the shift toward more sustainable, efficient electric mobility.
Unlike traditional charging methods, Elonroad’s solution is built for the future: seamless, safe, and compatible with all types of EVs. By embedding intelligence directly into roadways, the company unlocks new possibilities for data-driven transport, advanced logistics, and scalable green infrastructure. As Karin Ebbinghaus, Elonroad CEO & Co-founder, quoted: “In a time when the transport sector is responsible for nearly 20% of global emissions, Elonroad’s technology delivers a transformative answer - enabling growth in mobility without compromising our planet.”
Co-shaping the future with customers
As unconventional it might be, Elonroad focuses on co-creating solutions with customers by inviting them into the development process. Rather than applying traditional sales methods, the Elonroad’s team works closely with partners to understand their operational challenges and jointly shape pilot projects. This approach has helped the company build strong, trust-based relationships early on.
Creating impact on the transport and mobility sector
Elonroad has introduced a truly innovative solution to one of the most critical challenges in electric mobility - charging infrastructure. By enabling dynamic charging while vehicles are in motion, the company has redefined what’s possible for electric transport. Their technology reduces reliance on oversized batteries, lowers costs, and increases the feasibility of electrifying heavy-duty and high-usage fleets. Being vehicle-agnostic and scalable, their technology has opened doors across multiple sectors, from public transport to logistics. In addition, their work has sparked new collaborations and inspired policy discussions around sustainable infrastructure, positioning Elonroad as a thought leader in the transition to electric mobility, enjoying recognition and interest from governments, industry leaders, and cities all over Europe.
Joining D2XCEL: The benefits
Elonroad was selected to join D2XCEL in September 2024. The collaboration with D2XCEL’s partners helped the company accelerate business development. As Karin quoted: “The program helped us sharpen our go-to-market strategy, validate customer segments, and build a clearer commercial roadmap for our charging solutions. This has been valuable in preparing for market expansion and investor dialogues.”
Through the D2XCEL network, ElonRoad initiated discussions with a number of investors, which are ongoing and may evolve into future collaborations, but also helped the company strengthen investor outreach. Commenting on this opportunity, Karin said: “The visibility and credibility gained through the program have also helped strengthen our investor outreach beyond the immediate network.”
General note:
Our case studies section illustrates the concrete impact of the D2XCEL scaling programme on selected ventures. They were chosen through a structured process based on mentor and group manager nominations and pre-defined criteria, prioritising companies that demonstrated measurable progress, strong relevance to societal and industrial challenges, innovative approaches, and clear potential for scalability. Together, the cases demonstrate how tailored support, international connections, and structured mentoring are translated into real outcomes across diverse sectors.
